Role
UX Designer
Duration
Jan 2017 - June 2018
Objective
To redesign the Resume.com website to better meet user needs, improve usability, and modernize the interface.
Introduction
Resume.com needed a significant overhaul of its resume builder to enhance user satisfaction and efficiency, addressing the evolving needs of a diverse user base.
Challenges
Users found the existing resume builder to be inflexible and unintuitive, leading to a frustrating experience and high user attrition rates.
User Needs
Through early user research, it became clear that users required a more adaptable tool that could support a variety of resume formats and was easier to navigate.
Process
User Interviews & Persona Creation: Conducted 4 detailed interviews, developing comprehensive personas to represent the user base.
Empathy Maps: Created empathy maps for each persona to better understand user emotions and pain points.
Strategy & Planning
Journey Maps: Developed journey maps to outline the user's path through the resume builder, identifying key touchpoints for enhancement.
Card Sorting: Performed card sorting sessions to determine logical groupings for resume content, aiding in intuitive navigation and categorization.
Task Prioritization: Utilized an impact-effort matrix to prioritize tasks, ensuring efficient allocation of resources towards features that offered the highest value and feasibility.
Design & Prototyping
Site Mapping & Wireframing: Based on research insights, developed a comprehensive site map and created low-fidelity wireframes to sketch out the basic layout and user flow.
High-Fidelity Mockups: Transitioned to high-fidelity mockups, crafting a visually appealing and highly functional final design.
Solutions
Implemented Features:
Enhanced Customization: Users can now effortlessly modify resume sections and formats with a drag-and-drop interface.
Interactive Previews: Integrated a feature for users to see how changes affect the final document in real-time.
Content Assistance: Introduced a dynamic content library with customizable job descriptions and skill sets.
Design Decisions: The design was guided by the principles of minimalism to ensure clarity and ease of use, employing a calm color palette to reduce visual fatigue.
Outcomes
Impact: The redesigned resume builder witnessed a 50% increase in user engagement and a 35% decrease in drop-off rates, with overwhelmingly positive feedback on its usability and flexibility.
Learnings: The project reinforced the value of a thorough UX process, highlighting how diverse research methods and iterative design can substantially enhance user satisfaction.
Conclusion
The project not only met but exceeded user expectations, setting a new standard for usability within digital resume building tools. It showcased how methodical research and user-centered design can lead to successful outcomes in complex digital environments.
