Project Overview
Project Title
Designing the Selectlist Component for Consistency and Usability at Indeed
Role
UX Designer
Duration
2023 - 2024
Objective
To create a consistent, user-friendly Selectlist component, ensuring alignment with the latest design updates and other semantic components as well as improving overall user experience and accessibility.
Introduction
Introducing my recent project, Semantic Components, which focuses on enhancing the Indeed design systems by providing more semantic and functional components such as Selectlist. This will support a broader set of advanced use cases and eliminate problematic third-party dependencies in the process, making the design systems more efficient and streamlined.
Research Objectives
Identify inconsistencies in the current Selectlist component.
Analyze competitors' implementations for best practices.
Gather use cases and user needs for the Selectlist component.
Methodology
Competitive Analysis: Researched and analyzed competitors’ Selectlist (Dropdown, Select and similar) components.
Internal Use Case Analysis: Reviewed current use cases within Indeed’s system. (image below)
Collaboration: Worked closely with content strategists, developers, accessibility team and designers to gather requirements and feedback.
Design Tool: Utilized Figma and google docs for designing and updating the component and its documentation.
Internal Use Case Analysis
Process
Research and Analysis: Conducted a thorough analysis of competitors and current use cases.
Collaboration: Held regular meetings with the design system team to discuss findings and gather input.
Design Guidelines: Created updated Selectlist component designs in Figma, incorporating the latest updates.
Documentation: Developed comprehensive documentation detailing how to use the new Selectlist component.
Findings
Inconsistencies: Identified several inconsistencies in the current Selectlist implementation across different pages and products.
Best Practices: Gained insights from competitors on best practices for designing intuitive and accessible Selectlist components.
User Needs: Highlighted key user needs such as accessibility, ease of use, and consistency.
Design Solutions
Updated Component: Designed a new Selectlist component in Figma, ensuring consistency and alignment with Indeed’s design system.
User-Centered Design: Ensured the component meets user needs and provides a seamless experience.
Collaboration
and Iteration
Feedback Loop: Conducted multiple rounds of feedback with content strategists, developers, designers and Ally team.
Iterative Design: Iteratively refined the component based on feedback and testing results.
Results
Consistency: Achieved a consistent Selectlist component across all products and pages.
Usability: Improved usability and user satisfaction with the new component.
Documentation: Created thorough and polished documentation to guide the use of the new Selectlist component.
Challenges and Solutions
Challenge: Aligning cross-functional teams and gathering comprehensive feedback.
Solution: Established clear communication channels and held regular meetings to ensure alignment and address concerns promptly.
Conclusion
The project successfully addressed inconsistencies in the Selectlist component, resulting in a more user-friendly and consistent experience. Collaboration and iterative design were key to achieving the project goals.
